UNITY MURAL

Students from SHS's Diversity Club have teamed up with LUCHA Club for Latin Americans, Black student Union, Gay Straight Alliance Club, other clubs and art classes to design and erect a Unity Mural on campus. The Diversity Club was created in 2011 to celebrate cultural diversity and built racial tolerance. The mural's purpose is to represent as many cultures as possible by painting a tree with representative symbols hanging from its limbs. Symbolically, the tree is the bond that unites all the symbols as one. This mural project was funded by SHF via donations by families.

HAPPY RETIREMENT MITCH MEYER

Mitch MeyerTo reflect back on Mitch's legacy, did you know that In 24 varsity seasons at Soquel High, Mitch led the Knights to nine Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League titles and 19 Central Coast Section appearances, including winning the 1995 Division II crown and posted a career record of 436-240-2 overall. He also coached Soquel's junior varsity four seasons prior to taking over as varsity coach. Mitch saw his 1988 and 2000 teams reach CCS title games. His 2000 team, headlined by current Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Casey McGehee, was the first and only team in the county to go unbeaten in league in an 18-game format, and has helped turn out dozen collegiate players and four Major League Baseball players -- John Orton with the California Angels (class of '84). Bo Hart (class of '95) , McGehee and Aaron Bates. While at SHS Mitch has taught Health, Anatomy and Physiology, Earth Science and Physical Education. I also asked Mitch what was one of his fondest memories at SHS- "When students who have graduated come back to thank you. Also, winning a CCS championship". Any words of advice to pass along? "Enjoy the ride, the time passes so fast...I always tell the kids when they're stressing out to breath in, breathe out and move on" Thank you Mitch for everything you have done for SHS. We wish you all the best in the next chapter of your life!

At the end of the school SHS will wish  Mitch Meyer "Happy Retirement!" When asked what is the first thing you're going to do to celebrate? Mitch replied "First thing I'm going to do is head up to the Sierras for a nice long back-packing trip".
