The Pirates of Penzance

piratesSave the Dates! May 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 2012 for a wacky & irreverent SHS version of The Pirates of Penzance, in this fresh take of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic operetta. This hilarious farce has sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the ridiculous dictates of honor and duty. Can catastrophe be averted? Will love prevail? Of course, but not before Gilbert and Sullivan fire a few broadsides at social stuffiness in this rollicking musical that has music, paradox and silliness delivered with wit as sharp as a pirate's cutlass.Tickets  available from cast members or at the door-General admission-$12/ seniors/ASB-$10. Reserved seating $15. Contact Maggie Kline, SHS, for more information: 831 429-3909x158.

KUDO'S Farley's Kickboxing Academy

WRESTLINAt the outset of the season, Soquel High's wrestling team had its back pinned against the wall, figuratively speaking. It was coachless and, therefore, homeless. Talk about a late reversal. The small-roster Knights wound up getting a pristine off-campus facility --" one with professionally cleaned mats --" and a top-notch coach. Enter the saviors of the program: Francis Farley and Jimmie Walker. Farley had the means to house the team at his gym --" Farley's Kickboxing Academy on South Rodeo Gulch Road in Soquel --"  and Walker, had the wrestling know-how.

Mark Bidelman Retiring after Three Decades

Soquel High School's choir director Mark Bidelman told this year's senior class 4 years ago that he would be leaving the school with them, but after 30-plus years, his pending retirement still doesn't feel real."I've got so much to do between now and the end of the school year, I can't really think about it," he said recently. He'll be leading his students at festivals and performances from Columbia to Reno, not to mention an upcoming trip to Los Angeles or the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival at Cabrillo of which he is the festival director.   See the full story
Schell signs letter of Intent to attend CAL.

Max schellMax Schell's family, for the most part, bleeds blue & gold.Yale Blue & California Gold, to be exact -- the school colors at UC Berkeley.

His sister, Elizabeth, went to Cal to play water polo & compete in crew. His brother-in-law, Brad, played rugby there. And, his father, Mike, had a spot on the Golden Bears football team roster. A standout water polo player -- and arguably the most decorated to graduate from Soquel High -- Schell has become a 4-time 1st team CCS selection in addition to collecting 3 MVP awards in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and 1  in the Tri-County Athletic League. He was named CCS Division II MVP in the fall after leading the Knights to a 16-9 overall record and their 17th straight league title. He was Freshman of the Year in 2008-09, Senior of the Year last fall, and was a 2-time All-American through the Junior Olympics in 2010 & 2011.He scored 92 goals, contributed 33 assists and had 39 steals in 25 games for Soquel last season.  Click to read more on Max

IN MEMORIAM

Lynn Beebe, class of '82 a longtime county educator, basketball

coach and  mentor to aspiring college students passed away after a prolonged struggle with cancer. Serving young people was a recurring theme in Lynn's life. In her nearly 30-year career in education, Lynn served as a parks and rec leader and program supervisor; substitute teacher; instructor of gifted and talented children; single-subject classroom educator; basketball coach and athletic director; and junior high guidance counselor. At Soquel High Lynn blossomed into a standout basketball player, leading the Knights to numerous championships, and making the all-league team in 1982.  In 2010, Soquel High retired Lynn's number 32 jersey and it hangs permanently in the school's gymnasium. Until 2010, Lynn was the tallest girl ever to play hoops at Soquel High. After graduating from Soquel High School, Lynn continued her academic and athletic pursuits at Cal State University Fresno.
