WIPEOUT WINNER- Rodrigo Plaza (class of '10)
|
ABC's "Wipeout" features contestants constantly getting knocked down by objects coming out of nowhere with the goal of getting to the finish line with the best time. Sounds like the source for a few easy laughs, but what about actually competing on the show. "I started watching the show when I was about 16 years old," Plaza said. When he turned 18,he interviewedand passed a physical, Good News, Plaza was told that he had made it on to the show."I had a couple months to prepare before I actually went in for the first round, so I started working out a lot." But once he got there, nothing could have prepared him for the tasks ahead. "You have no idea what you're about to do, and what you're getting yourself into, I guess it's all a matter of luck andperseverance. It was very tolling to constantly get knocked down, but I just had to push through it." And pushing through is exactly what Plaza did. Making it through four rounds, Plaza won "Wipeout" and now has a freshly signed $50,000.

One month after getting his bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly SanLuis Obispo, Weston Sapia (class of '06) landed a coveted jobat LinearTechnology in Milpitas. In his spare time this past winter, Weston tookavalanche training courses which prepared him to assist with avalancherescues, and to understand avalanche conditions. Weston has spentevery single weekend in Tahoe inorder to help set avalanche monitors, as well as to snowboard when thepowder begs for it.
Upon graduating with a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from the Coast Guard Academy, Aviator Dylan Sapia (class of '05) won a coveted billet to flight school atthe Naval Training Center in Pensacola, Florida. Dylanfinished a two-year program this past June in which he became qualified to fly fixedwing aircraft, as well as rescue helicopters. This course not onlyteaches pilots how to fly in good weather, but extremeweather and at night, performing instrument only flying, and usingnight vision goggles for future rescue missions. Dylan was trained in the sameschool that teaches all Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Aviators how tofly. In 2011, the Coast Guard, Navy, and Marines are celebrating their100th year of flying. Dylan graduated as Coast Guard Aviator#4353.So in the 100 year history of the Coast Guard, only 4352 other pilots have qualified for thisprestigious "Winging" before Dylan.
